Sidney Chess Club (Chess Nuts) operates from the Shoal Community Centre on Resthaven Drive in Sidney, British Columbia. Members gather every Tuesday between 1 and 4 p.m. Composed of regular players and those who drop in from time to time the primary goal is to enjoy and promote a love of chess. All are welcome from absolute beginners to Grand Masters! From 6 years old to 86+ years old - all genders. The club owns several club-level sets and books on chess - but if you have a favourite board and pieces, bring them along !
The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and conversational - a social atmosphere offering players the chance to get to know each other while improving at chess. There are no formal membership or club fees. Players do pay $2.00 per session or 4$ if not a member of the Shoal Community Centre*. All these proceeds go back to the Centre to pay for the use of the room.
The current chess activity at the Shoal began In 2018, a couple - Sonia and Robert, played regularly and got the word out of the desire for more players and a small core of regulars was established. By December 2018 several other players were involved and at a Christmas gathering hosted by Sonia and Robert, the name Chess Nuts was born.
Fast forward to today to find some 19 players on the roster ..... With a solid regular core 10 players. Over the years members have explored the tournament experience entering chess tournaments hosted by the BC Chess Federation in Victoria and Sidney.
membership at the Shoal Community Centre is $50.00 per year for an individual and brings a number of benefits including discounted rates for all drop-in activities such as chess.
